“Mawreth didn’t ask why we needed to wait for dusk to start the playback of the tapes. If only more of our colleagues in Delft were like them. We worked out how to wire the speakers into the old electrical system for the lanthorn itself — and we got it spinning round without trouble. Tonight, instead of light thrown over the reservoir, over the flooded town, over the miles of old growth, it will be our Weddell Sea sounds.

“Mid-afternoon, I’d grown frustrated the students hadn’t arrived—but then we saw the train of station wagons coming through the trees. Wyomia, Mawreth’s assistant, explained that she and her friends had come from an all-night installation in a garden on the Miskatonic—something involving ear trumpets and lightning. Mawreth scattered their students off into the forest—after the test they returned to say the sounds are audible 1 km from the lighthouse.

“It still strikes me as strange that hundreds of maple trees — 101cm diameter, some of them! — remained uncut so close to a rural Vermont town. But now there’s just the reservoir—and the only people that come up here are the unsmiling hunters we met when carrying our equipment from the vans, and these lovely and peculiar students.”
